What Mr Jones felt in his swing..

Bobby Jones felt that he left the club behind him at the top of the backswing as he started into his down-swing. Feel that the club is the last to move from the top of the backswing and that the hands and arms merely drop the club into position on the way down.

Where are your hands

Place your hands opposite your left thigh for every club in the bag except your driver. For the driver, place your hands towards the centre of your sternum. This may set your hands slightly behind the ball, which is fine for the driver.

Should you really keep your head down ?

Keep your head down is one of the worst pieces of advice available. Try swing to a full finish position with your head down, it’s impossible. Instead allow your head to come up naturally as the club is swung past impact and into a full, high finish position. Remember there is a difference between consciously lifting out of your golf posture and allowing your head to come up naturally.

Upside down drill

Swing and feel the weight of the clubhead. If you can’t feel the weight of the clubhead during the golf stroke, you are hitting and not swinging the club. To get a feeling for this, place your club upside down and try swing the grip-end of the club. Now, turn it back correctly and swing it again. This time you should get the feeling for the clubhead swinging.

Alignment reminder

Aim your club at the target not your body. If you aim your body at the target, your club must point right of it. We don’t want to make our best golf swing when we are aimed to the right of the target because the ball will not go to the target.

Be strong mentally

Commit to your target and the shot you want to hit before you approach the ball. In-decision and stray thoughts will creep in if we are un-sure about what you want to do.

Soft hands

Muscle tension causes more swing mistakes than any other factor. When we keep our wrists and our arms soft, the club will work the way it is designed. Think of when you are using a hammer, hands firm, wrists and arms soft.

Wrists, hands or arms ?

The wrists move in the golf swing because the weight of the club makes them move. So forget about the wrists and make your arms and hands work correctly.

Keeping it simple

When we move our inside (our body), forces generated cause our outside (arms, hands and club) to move at a far greater rate. We cannot add any worthwhile power to these forces which are naturally produced by the rotational movement of our body, so why try? So all you have to do is allow the club to do the work!

Control over the golf ball

In golf, we have no control over where the ball goes. All we can do is focus on the things we can control, our aim, grip, set-up and swinging the club in balance. And if you do this the ball will go where it is meant to.

Slice or hook or straight

When you slice the ball, you have done everything exactly correct to slice the ball. If you want to hook the ball, do the complete opposite. If you want to hit the ball straight, find a middle-ground. A slice is caused when we swing our club to the left with our clubface pointing to the right.

Stay on plane

At the top of your backswing, try getting your left thumb directly underneath the weight of the golf club. This will keep your swing on-plane.

The All Important Basics

Beginner? Regular player? Top level amateur? Professional? Never under estimate the power of the basics. You may be in possession of an excellent golf swing but without good solid basics the ball will not find the target on a regular basis. Count to FIVE !!!! and remember the following....... One = Aim the club head, Two = Grip the club correctly, Three = Understand the ball position, Four = Align your body correctly to your target, Five = Take a good, athletic posture position

Backswing Essentials

Look for the things all the tour pros have in common. Ensure you have transferred your body weight onto your back foot at the top of the swing and that your glove hand shoulder is over your back foot. Exercise swinging without a ball taking the club to the top of the swing and checking for..........SHOULDER OVER BACK FOOT. WEIGHT TRANSFERRED TO BACK FOOT...

Follow Through

The fruits of your labour ! Make a good set up, complete your backswing and these things will in turn allow for a successful and full follow through. Everyones finish to the swing is different but check the following.....Body weight on the front side of your body (none on the back foot). Club behind your back and hands over your shoulders. This is the complete follow through position to look for

What Is a Golf Swing ??

Ask yourself the above question. Can you answer it ? What is the answer ? The answer is that there are many answers and everyone sees a golf swing in a different way. BUT the key to any good golf swing is to have a swing that can "repeat" over and over again. Why not let our team at the school find the key to your swing and make it repeat time after time after time ??
